December Reflections 15: cherished

A toy pig made from beige corduroy. It has one blue eye.

Pa gave me this venerable pig on semi-permanent loan some time in the late 1990s, probably, and told me, “You must cherish him,” so I did, and then gave him back when I went to university, I should think, and then I reclaimed him last year.

I have a few of Pa’s old toys (for a war baby, he did extremely well). I’m still missing one of the Dutch dolls. I think Pa removed her from the dolls’ house to crew a steam engine, but where has she gone? I hope she’ll turn up as we continue to empty the house.

  1. I was watching a programme about buses , then I remembered a man I worked with in a green grocers in Jewry St .. I think the owner of the shop was Mrs Burbage ? Anyway Robert Jowitts name miraculously popped into my head after 48 years ! He once invited me to be his bus conductress for a day 😊we went to Marwell zoo where we spent the day going round and round while I issued tickets and took fares .. I had a fabulous day ! So when I googled him it brought me here … I’m sorry for your loss . In the brief time I knew him I just recall a man with huge enthusiasm ..

    1. Thank you for sharing that memory – so glad you enjoyed your day! I remember him talking about the Marwell service – apparently the cassowary bird didn’t like the bus at all…
